How to Adjust Your Pressure Washer Unloader the RIGHT Way!
Share
Step 1: Know Your Pump Specs
-
Check your pump’s maximum PSI and GPM ratings.
-
Operating outside these specs can damage your pump.
Step 2: Select the Correct Nozzle
-
Remove any chemical injector.
-
Connect hose and trigger gun.
-
Install the nozzle recommended for your pump (verify with your gauge).
-
Start the engine and hold the trigger gun open.
-
Slowly turn the unloader knob while monitoring the pressure gauge.
-
Adjust until the pressure matches your pump’s rated PSI.
-
If pressure is too high, switch to a larger nozzle instead of adjusting the unloader down.
Pro Tip: Never lower pressure by turning down the unloader—this reduces flow and cleaning efficiency.
Step 3: Use the Right Tools
-
Pressure Gauge: Rated ≥1.5× pump max PSI (e.g., 3,500 PSI pump → 5,250 PSI gauge).
-
Engine Tachometer: Ensure engine runs at proper RPM (typically ~3,600 RPM).
Step 4: Adjust Flow-Actuated Unloaders
-
With engine running and gun closed, loosen the jam nut.
-
Turn the adjusting bolt fully into the unloader body.
-
Turn outward to increase pressure, one full turn at a time.
-
Open the gun, wait a few seconds, then read the gauge.
-
Repeat until desired pressure is reached.
Step 5: Adjust Pressure or Compensating Unloaders
-
Start with knob turned out or nut loosened.
-
Turn knob/nut clockwise gradually until pressure matches pump rating.
-
Avoid fully compressing the spring—this prevents spikes when gun is closed.
Step 6: Lock It In
-
Once the correct nozzle and pressure are set, remove the adjusting knob or tighten jam nuts to prevent accidental changes.
-
To lower pressure in the future, switch to a larger nozzle—not by turning the unloader.
✅ Result: Proper nozzle selection and unloader adjustment ensures maximum cleaning efficiency, longer pump life, and fewer repairs.
